Anime emulation in j-drama has been a fag for a while. Although 周星驰 did it better in his own way, it was never meant to be as explicit and faithful in all components of Anime language as in <N.C.>.
However, if you look into the lower level expression, something was not right. There is excessive stillness in the camera language that expose the imperfect human interpretation to the audience, e.g., the facial exaggeration cannot hold on for too long. I think it's unfair to expect everybody to do it as well as Jim Carrey or 周星驰, but the camera could have made up for it. If I were there, I would make a lot of separate micro-snapshots for each character; make them really short with variation in distance and perspective.
In general, <N.C> was on an intriguing adventure. They just had to really use the camera as part of the narratives.
Camera narratives are like spectral analysis/sampling of real-time events. To gain a smoother frequency representation, overlapping sampling windows should be used, i.e., the same moment requires multiple shots with different camera settings to present. Trade time with space and efforts.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-03-17T05:12:49Z</dcterms:modified>

<God Father (I)>

[57:00] Putting Mike on the side of the view during the farewell conversation, the setup suggests that sth other than his girlfriend was holding his mind.
[58:20] Centering Mike's girlfriend with a fixed shot even when Mike was kissing her places the focus on her confusion and sorrow.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-01-20T20:10:14Z</dcterms:modified>
