Lincoln @ Theatre Maisonneuve

Abbey Lincoln

这个版本的<the world is falling down>可能是她最棒的演绎了,

"I'll sing by myself",
"The world is falling down,
so hold my hand,
hold my hand..."

There are some folks

I used to know

Who used to smile

And say hello,

And spin the world

And turn the page

Entertaining

From the stage

Father time

Forever true

Loves its own

And me and you

Disappear just like the sun,

When the day is done.

The world is falling down,

Hold my hand

It's a lonely sound,

Hold my hand

We'll follow the breeze

And go like the wind

And look for a place

Where the willows bend

The world is falling down,

Hold my hand, hold my hand,

Hold my hand, hold my hand

[ The World is falling down... lyrics found on http://www.completealbumlyrics.com ]
Summer's gone

And winter's here

We had a lot of rain this year

The news is really very sad

The time is late,

The fruit is bad

The morning's come

And roosters crow

But people have no place to go

And disappear

Just like the sun

When the day is done

The world is falling down

Hold my hand

It's a lonely sound

Hold my hand

We'll follow the sund

And live for the day

And look for a place

Where the children play

The world is falling down

Hold my hand,

Hold my hand

Hold my neatly done.
I hate to say it myself, but I had an incredible sense of humor tonight.
It was roughly drafted and delivered in a seamless flow.
I have no And IT FEELS LIKE HOME HERE.
Since there was a strong motivation for making this aparment my headquarter, the next logical move would be hunting for the other member.
This was my first time,,,,
And absolutely a fun experience, some part was even breath-taking to me.
<Death Note> has been the background melody throughout the process, so I guess my report would be cooked with a little bit spice of that.
つつく

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-04-21T07:09:09Z</dcterms:modified>

3 Amigos

Just after I decided to spare any other effort for this birthday thing, J suggested that the lab should do sth for my birthday (....I think that's just a party excuse), so I said yes maybe we can go to 3 Amigos and get my hat!
3 Amigos is this Mexican restaurant near Guy that offers a customer a Mexican hat and a piece of candled cake for free if it happens to be his/her birthday that day; the waiters will be singing the Happy Birthday song to the customer as well.
Out of the blue, the whole party became dominated by an intriguing debate on the relationship/superiority between science and religion. Since the participants are knowledgeable inter-disciplinary grad students, it was pretty exciting. I'm trying to take down some of the witty statements (there were much more):

It (science) is not hard; it is irreconcilable.
Unless proved by yourself, science is a religion. If you started your independent move towards what a Nobel-prize winner has accomplished, you'd probably reach a different result. Because we never bothered doing so, we became part of the religion.
Science-inspired technology didn't change the world as much as social engineering driven by religion.
Science-omniscience is dismissible because it makes it less of science; assuming the fundamental fallacy of science wouldn't make it any less powerful; quite the opposite, we might find something useful.
The fact that almost every Canadian/American president includes "God bless us" in their campaign speeches is a strong evidence that North-America is a Christian society; the cross on the Quebec flag is another proof.
Science and religion are a continuum controlled by a probabilistic threshold.
We actually think about life, death, and after-life all the time; the reason why we avoid getting hit by a car is an indication that we don't believe the existence of after-life.

Other information

How to drink tequila: put some salt on your hand and lick it, then get a bite of the lime, finally get a sip of tequila and enjoy the blend taste.
"Canada" originated from a native American language, meaning "village"; when the colonists first heard of it, they thought it actually referred to a country, hence the modern Canada came into being.
"Habs" is short for Canadians; in Montreal, you will see a logo 'CH', which stands for Canadian Habs.

Jokes

While we were still in a long queue, I said, maybe we should go somewhere else and come back next year......suddenly the line moved forward for quite a bit. J said "can you say that again?", I repeated "maybe next year"; the queue stayed the same; "OK, that makes a 50% probability....", said J.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-04-20T05:01:19Z</dcterms:modified>

1) Recently a few non-Mandarin speakers have thrived on blogging in Mandarin. I'd like to create more of this.
When Susannah said "your smile is not just the face but in your eyes and I've been always looking for that kind of smile of speakers", I was so moved because, yes, that's the way I show my friendliness and love to people, finally someone can see it through.
I'll take down all the comments from my fellow TMs, as the souvenir.
Susannah (My mentor, her かっこいい speech was the reason I came to the club.)

Strengths: very well-prepared. No notes! So amazing, especially for a first speech. You looked in total control, not nervous, very personable and friendly delivery - great "smile in the eyes!"
clear, audible, confident, and funny
what an absolute pleasure this speech was to listen to!

Millie (Another my personal idol there)

I really loved your speech + presentation. Congrats!
Great vocal variety, nice sense and use of humor, very well prepared; I feel like we really got to know you! Your speech was very inspirational; well structured speech
you are starting at a very strong point; you pronunciation is excellent; you showed serious dedication towards your speech preparation. I truly hope you continue to be so dedicated to your personal improvement and the progress of the club.

Silvena

Great title! Great humor! What made them thirsty though? Financial situation, the ever-wider wealth gap between the minority, including these guys and gals in the naughty pictures, and the absolute majority, and the collective lack of fundamental spiritual support have drilled a deep hole into the society. On one hand, it is time to show some respect to privacy (not necessarily for the celebrities but in the context of the Chinese culture); on the other, it's also a sign of the collapse of the traditional entertainment system where creator-consumer interactions used to be minimized. I still don't understand why people adore the idea of bringing a cam into the bed especially when they are not shooting an AV. I now trust AV more than regular movies, in a documentary sense. 张柏芝's response was kinda cool though and she's darn right about that "all that shit is not fun at all but people all do that". Anyway, idol celebrities are all sad/distorted people, as much as we are. They are born to be someone they are not and liars, unlike most of us, who learn to be that way only gradually. May thou rest in peace.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-02-18T19:00:10Z</dcterms:modified>

Ski

Another first-time of my life. Another crazy decision I made while I was still sick (I've missed the axis meeting, night market, and Jason's birthday party the previous day).
Bits and pieces

by school bus as usual; it's equipped with a pretty decent heating utitily so it's cheap and nothing short of comfort. Pretty economical compared to a tour bus.
a group of 30 people or so
45-min drive
the ski I used is 150cm long; ski boots are pretty tough and really tight especially when you have thick socks on like I did; together the combination was pretty snow-proof and safe when you fall down: the boots, with yourself, detaches easily from the ski when a dramatically large force is exerted onto the junction between it and the ski, protecting you from a tragic bone-crush.
At the beginning, I fell like hell; soon I realized that I was doing sth impossible: trying to brake instantly (with an overly high v0, the acceleration will lead to a brake distance of a couple meters)
by using the sticks, I got better ideas of how to push my legs to steer the wheel, otherwise I couldn't have unsterstood what exactly the "push your left leg harder" means as the coach told us.
people favored the idea of going on a steep "green" track to force someone who couldn't swim to learn to swim for life on his/her own; I, however, decided to stick to my "baby hill" but set myself up on a series of tasks; each one of them was distinct in its goal but still a logical progression of the previous one, e.g., Task k deals with a right-turn at 60 degree to the horizontal axis, followed by a similar turn to the left; Task k+1 switches the direction. It worked perfectly for me and by the end of the session I've already had a nice control over orientations and speeds; I can even select a target skiier and follow his/her moves with a pretty dynamic speed variation... of course... still on the "baby hill":P
met a bunch of people, most of whom are grad students that arrived in Montreal less than half a year ago.

Such a sport like ski is a challenge to the fear of speed. Human being is a weird "U-turn" creature. Before you could gain the control over the speed, fear is an inevitable precursor; after that, the alert starts to fade and you are on your way to the extravagance of speed, "the need for/addiction to speed", hence the abandon of control. The U-turn applies to everything.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-02-10T21:12:37Z</dcterms:modified>

Usually I took quiz like this as spam. He used to be a Drum & Bass DJ in NY, an ice-skater, and now a Ph.D. student here at Music Tech. New to C++, he was seeking help from me. We ended up working together on his STK beat-detection project. One-hour eXtreme Programming is what can best describe the experience. I haven't touched C++ for almost two years but the sensitivity to problems is still there. The culprit turned out to be the global sampling-rate. This variable was not initialized in the default constructor of his flanger class, nor was it assigned any values before being read (it was initialized in the other constructors but the main routine created the flanger object through the default one), leading to a randomly small sampling rate, which blew up his delay modulator as a scaling denominator. Such a stupid problem, however, led us to another observation: the sinusoidal functions in the math library of C (<math.h>) requires reasonably small input, otherwise either the compiler will complain or the sin() would generate Inf, which is ridiculous to any Matlab user. There are other similar absurdities in computer languages, e.g., the Python pre-3.x think that 1/2 = 0 but 1/2.0 = 0.5.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-12-12T12:02:15Z</dcterms:modified>

Job for MUMT-202 is done

People did their crazy routines for the sound recording assignment, but I'm just too lazy to show them here. Trust me, it was hell of great fun, e.g., Kyle did an electroacoustic one again with only five recorded vowels spoken by himself and some additional synths; having only a Sony MD, Allegra did an interesting collage of three solo marimba performances; Powell presented a pro-quality EMO recording; Leavvit and his band members in California made a remote collaborative recording; my personal favorite goes to Chris' original folk composition, which I believe has the potential to hit charts.
Half of them bombed the final exam but still, people left their personal marks when they knew they'd miss the correct answer, some as follows:
Q6) What are two possible reasons for using audio level compression?

Because it could give your recording tons of airplay and lots of $$$$, diamonds, cool sports car and women like whoa!!!
Key: It can be used to increase sustain, make quiet portions of a recording more audible in a noisy environment and make it possible to increase the overall average volume (make the recording more “hot”)

Q7) What is direct injection?

It is like what Kurt Cobain did when he was running out of ideas.
Key: When the output signal from an electric instrument (keyboard synthesizer, electric guitar, etc.), is sent directly to the recording console (1), usually through a DI box.

Q14) A musician is being close miced in studio, but unwanted sound from an adjacent sound source is leaking into the signal. Specify three different things that could be done attempted to prevent this leakage.

They could forget about it and record at another time when the noise is gone.
Key: Use a more directional mic, move the mic closer, use an acoustic barrier, etc. (1 mark each for any three such answers).

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-12-10T06:05:52Z</dcterms:modified>

Harmonization (4 Part); Harmonization (For Piano)
Great Piece; Great Piece
Bach Chorale; Bach Chorale
Corale Core; Corale Core
This was painfully useless...; This was painfully useless V.2
The Busy Bass Line; The Busy Bass Line (Piano Reduction)
A Summer Night's Reckoning; A Summer Night's Reckoning
Musica; Pina-o
Vocalise; Vocalise
A MIDI Masterpiece; A MIDI Masterpiece
Insert Title Here; Insert Title Here
Fundamentals of Finale; Fundamentals of Finale
Bach Chorale; Bach Chorale
assignment 8; assignment 8
Darlene; Darlene
Cory's Chorale; Cory's Chorale
midi choral; midi choral
Assignment 8-1; Assignment 8-2
In the Mood; In the Mood
Chorale; Chorale

If only one piece of TA experience were desired, doing it at Music Tech would be second to none. On one hand, the course scheme relatively tolerates prank-happy students; On the other hand, they are just bloody brilliant. Reviewing their homework results in my self-volunteered lab-jail for up to 5 days in last two weeks, with all my living necessities prepared. Well, I'm gonna leave this for the sequel. Let's talk about the anecdote of the assignment of Week #8, which is about score-editing with the idiot Finale 2008. Finale's user-unfriendliness rockets up annually. This time Ver. 2008 killed the "pasting multi-parts over layers" that was avaiable in Ver.2007, leaving the students no choice but to edit manually. The assignment was asking the student to import four seperate MIDI files from a 4-part chorale from Bach into Finale, edit them so that two versions of it are avialable as the results: one is the standard SATB and the other is a piano adaptation, with the soprano and alto recombined into the right hand, and the tenor and bass left hand. The instructor Cory required students to name him as the composer on the score, yet allowed them to come up with their own score titles. There it went, people seized the opportunity and created a list of titles as follows:

Harmonization (4 Part); Harmonization (For Piano)
Great Piece; Great Piece
Bach Chorale; Bach Chorale
Corale Core; Corale Core
This was painfully useless...; This was painfully useless V.2
The Busy Bass Line; The Busy Bass Line (Piano Reduction)
A Summer Night's Reckoning; A Summer Night's Reckoning
Musica; Pina-o
Vocalise; Vocalise
A MIDI Masterpiece; A MIDI Masterpiece
Insert Title Here; Insert Title Here
Fundamentals of Finale; Fundamentals of Finale
Bach Chorale; Bach Chorale
assignment 8; assignment 8
Darlene; Darlene
Cory's Chorale; Cory's Chorale
midi choral; midi choral
Assignment 8-1; Assignment 8-2
In the Mood; In the Mood
Chorale; Chorale

Cracked up as I was, I summed them up and sent them back to the class, just for fun. (My favorite is the "Insert Title Here")

Harmonization (4 Part); Harmonization (For Piano)
Great Piece; Great Piece
Bach Chorale; Bach Chorale
Corale Core; Corale Core
This was painfully useless...; This was painfully useless V.2
The Busy Bass Line; The Busy Bass Line (Piano Reduction)
A Summer Night's Reckoning; A Summer Night's Reckoning
Musica; Pina-o
Vocalise; Vocalise
A MIDI Masterpiece; A MIDI Masterpiece
Insert Title Here; Insert Title Here
Fundamentals of Finale; Fundamentals of Finale
Bach Chorale; Bach Chorale
assignment 8; assignment 8
Darlene; Darlene
Cory's Chorale; Cory's Chorale
midi choral; midi choral
Assignment 8-1; Assignment 8-2
In the Mood; In the Mood
Chorale; Chorale

I used up the space on my cam and then went on with my pen and notepad.
Some quotes: (Kakyo: the internet stuff was aroused by an audience question "I heard that you are against putting up music onto the internet", she responded "wooh, where did u hear it from? it's quite the opposite!")

I have no desire to manipulate anybody. Live is about the artists and the audience creating the night together, with mutual communication, collective trust. It's love.
The night with Bob Dylan, it's not about a duet, it's about a boy and a girl singing together. and then.... he kissed me:) Someone captured it and had it on Youtube for free, and I became momentarily in love with the little thing (Kakyo: digicam).
Internet is a cool club. But I'm just the dinasour who has to walk slowly, as long as there are still green leaves to eat.
I hate sports, and I don't like the internet either. But since they exist, I have to be compassionate and learn about them.
Rock is probably one of the few nice things that America gave the world.
I don't mind downloading but I hate my work being tampered, hate sampling and someone using my voice and distort it for their own purposes. As artists we have already been fucked up enough, we should at least have this little respect.
I don't give a fxxk if they pay or not. I just feel happy about the 2 million comments on my Myspace page while my records were sold much less than that! It's amazing~

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-10-06T22:12:18Z</dcterms:modified>

not an illusion

blogger and flickr are back as well!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-07T06:47:07Z</dcterms:modified>

Shopping

For once, I decided not to cold-shoulder Chinese festivals as always.
Bought an alarm radio clock at Source for mom, after her sustained requests for 3 years. This $30 RCA model is actually quite neat. It's often an irresistible temptation to stuff in fancy/ridiculous functions at the cost of ignorance of major UI flaws (take a look at all those crap MP3 players and software such as iTunes and Windows Media Player). Fortunately, the manufacturer of this clock made notable efforts in its interface and several long-missing features, such as "nap" (setting up a countdown alarm before you can enjoy your nap for up to 2 hours), are finally implemented. Such an easy function takes the cake, which I don't understand why giant companies like Sony never incorporated this tiny little feature into their $80 lines. The volume of the alarm is unadjustable but designed to be fade-in style. I think this is not necessarily a drawback because A, you don't really need a full scale of variable volume for this, and B, limited volume choices might not fit everybody (you could lose a date if the "soft" one turned out to be a whisper). Instead, a fade-in first allows you a few seconds for fighting your reluctance and then starts to show no mercy. Makes perfect sense to me. Another simple achievement is the "forward" and "backward" buttons. Surprisingly, this component for time setting scheme has been an idiosyncratic domain where not every model would agree upon what this RCA model and millions of MP3 players choose to do: use two and only two buttons. A short press makes a slow go and you get a fast run when you hold the buttons. Simple as that, even an $80 Sony one doesn't have it!
I do have to say that using one single LED screen for displaying both time and radio frequency is a good try, but here in the RCA model only when the time-setting mode is at the "current time" can the frequency tuning be viewable. If you are in the middle of setting your alarms and you wanna tune the radio, you'll be blinded to your radio tuning behavior by the alarm view unless you switch back to the "current time" mode. This is obviously a bug, though it's somewhat durable because I can hear the radio and that has been what most of us would rely upon during tuning back in the analog age. Aside from all these you have the time-zone switch, an LED intensity dimmer, as commonly seen in a few more recent models. In terms of garbage features, I'd say the "Aux" function has pathetically fallen into this category and quite ironically, it is the only feature I would complain about. I thought this was going to be an exciting iPod-ish idea, which could allow you to plug in your external music players, whatever it is, and make your own music collection selectable audio material for the radio alarm mode. I was dead wrong. They actually just want the radio to be able to play a speaker.... Well, it's my fault to expect too much from my $30 investment ....- -|| But anyways, I was quite happy about this purchase and I believe my mom will like it just as I do.
Just the moment I was stepping out of the door of Source, a backward glance earned me a gift for myself, a neck massaging pillow, for only $10! It uses 2 AA batteries, and you can carry this small little baby everywhere. Recommended for computer parasites like me. Unfortuately it was the last item they had. But I seriously need it. My neck has been giving me trouble every few weeks.
Then for a voltage converter I went to an electronics store run by indians. We had a pleasant talk there. One of them claimed that he truly hopes China could take over the world so that poor people can get what they deserve. They then cite an example that many socalled Sony earphones are actually garbage worth only 5 bucks, but if they are not made in China, they are sold for 30 bucks. Well, I have to admit it made me happy to hear such words but still, I feel sympathy for the Chinese manual labors and their families, who pay for innocent foreign compliments like this with their living in hell....

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-06-27T22:38:20Z</dcterms:modified>

baseball

Went out for a walk after dinner. Came across a baseball practice game in the open park nearby. It was actually my first time watching a real-world baseball game, before which all my motives and knowledge of baseball was from <Touch> and <H2>. The audience were french-speaking, so the familiar Japanese voices (of course the fine soundtrack that occupies my baseball memories, too) were nowhere to be found. The major eyeball attractions of these baseball Animes, the smooth three-outs and life-saving homeruns, proved to be mostly artistic exaggerations. Homerun is no easy cake. Today I saw two promising hits that did make the ball fly high. Unfortunately they all ended up getting intercepted by the outfielders. But I saw a very agile base-stealing, which seemed to have been left untouched in those two classic Animes.
Summer is right here. Dandelions were mailing their numerous tiny white parachutes on the evening breeze. They traveled all the way across the baseball field in the air, passing through the pitcher, the batter, the catcher, and everybody on the site, who were freezing, intensely waiting for the next exciting move.
Ahhhhhhhh, why wasn't my camera with me??!!!!!<img

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-02-13T22:05:25Z</dcterms:modified>

三个

Jonathan Abel: Roland RE-201 Space Echo

Trevor Pinch: 60-70's

Belinda Bedkovic.
Star Wars

Simon
Pressey: Game Audio

Ubisoft

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-11-15T05:37:05Z</dcterms:modified>
