When viewing debate threads on the internet, I find myself always drawn to the parties with strong opinion first, and end up stay with those that present fair grounds. Strong opinions are more often than not from trolls (FQs); but they stand out more than the calm narratives, thus catch your eyeballs faster, be it positive or negative. In the tech world, people with strong opinions like Linus are usually more helpful to beginners because they tell more stories in better human languages, otherwise, they'd be in trouble trying to drive "prejudice" home. On the other side of the world, your teachers strive to stay calm, politically correct, thorough, and linear, until you go to sleep hopelessly. You will finally become your teacher and leave the strong opinions alone. But as long as you don't join any circles too soon, strong opinions shall exist as an engine of intuition and critical thinking, or at least for the sake of fun. 7/30/2009 Insane Coding: State of sound in Linux not so sorry after all
Probably the most interesting and inspiring blog thread I read this year. It actually caused a phenomenal debate between the authors of JACK, OSS, PulseAudio and ext4 file system(!), who left 200 pages of comments down the 6-7 pages post.
Highly recommended to anyone interested in Linux audio. It's > a long read but seems to be worth it. What do others think about this? Adding more layers inevitably results in increased latency if not done correctly. PulseAudio's glitch-free mode addresses the interrupt-based problem in a different fashion. Unfortunately, the state of Linux drivers for common audio hardware in laptops is abysmal. Yes, it's trivial to experience high latency using PulseAudio, but that is not necessarily PulseAudio's fault. If you've seen any of my presentations[0] on audio, you'll walk away seeing that Linux audio is a complicated stack to troubleshoot and to improve incrementally. Ubuntu has shipped with suboptimal configurations in the past, but Jaunty was a fairly significant step forward (although many people will dispute it because "sound is broken for me"). Karmic, by all indications, will be better by virtue of more people spending cycles fixing bugs in ALSA and PulseAudio. For instance, significant buffering issues and audio anomalies have been identified and are nearly resolved in the common case in Karmic, Rawhide, and elsewhere. Closed-source software continues to be problematic. Lower sound quality is a red herring. ALSA's default resampler has known and quite audible limitations. The available resamplers in PulseAudio demolish the "lower sound quality" FUD. Jaunty shipped a configuration using a craptastic one in an attempt to balance CPU usage with perceptive quality. Lessons learned: Karmic will ship with a much better (but more CPU-intensive) resampler. Now let's consider why replacing ALSA with OSSv4 in Ubuntu Karmic would be a bad exercise: 1) No upstream mainline Linux support - Canonical and the Ubuntu community would have to devote resources to supporting OSSv4 as out-of-tree software, which is nontrivial for an area as significant as the audio stack. The kernel team's lessons learned in supporting such out-of-tree patches has indicated that no one would rather continue down that road. To date, no one has stepped forward to address the significant architectural concerns with merging OSSv4 into mainline Linux. 2) Lack of feature parity - while some HDA codecs are marginally better supported in OSSv4, that list continues to shrink. Creative X-Fi support, USB, USB MIDI support, to name a few, are consistently better supported in ALSA. Due to sheer momentum, that maintenance pace does not hold for OSSv4. That said, no one is opposed to seeing OSSv4 improve to the point where it can be merged into mainline Linux. From the audio team's perspective, it simply makes "support resources" sense for Ubuntu and its supported remixes to carry support for ALSA and PulseAudio by default. I'd like to add that if someone wants to see OSSv4 support in Ubuntu, that someone just needs to step up and work in the Ubuntu audio team. I volunteer my spare cycles working on Ubuntu audio, so I see no reason why a motivated and resourceful person cannot do similarly. -Dan 7/22/2009
Disruption is very much a customer centric model. It is not product
centric. Talking about disruption without talking about customers is
wasting your time. One of the most common misapplications of disruption
is to suggest that disruptive technology is ‘magic technology’. For
example, the Wii’s success is described to its motion technology. So if
someone comes out with ‘better’ motion controls, Wii is in trouble! In
reality, the success of the Wii success has more to do with bridging
gaps between overshot customers and non-customers.
The reason why Wii succeeded was not just because of ‘motion
controls’ and being ‘disruptive’. Xbox 360 and PS3 were overshooting
the market. $400-$600 in price points (which ARE caused by the HD
visuals). The HD graphics, especially since they required a different
type of TV, were not impressing the majority of the market. This
overshooting allowed a disruptor to enter the scene. Why No Discussion About Overshooting? « Malstrom’s Articles News

I think a bit better of a way to put it:
5 out of 10 users know what they want, but can't express it in a manner that communicates it sufficiently well to achieve it. 4 out of 10 users haven't a clue what they want, but think they do. 1 out of 1 users know what they want and can express it.
And then you have the developers, who want to make something with nice nifty features, but don't want to be bothered with the polish.
This reminds me of a friend who is a senior analyist has a paper on her cube wall, I've seen two variants of the theme. It has a picture of a sports car with the caption "What the users want". This is followed by the picture of a UFO (in some variants a fighter jet) with "What the developers want to make". This is followed by "What the company is willing to spend money on" and it has some small compact car. And then finally, a picture of a really funny looking "tricked out" tricycle with the caption "What ends up being produced". 7/8/2009 非常累, 不过时间还在用.
